Behind 11 kills from Mary Murphy and 16 assists and 10 points from Megan Melone, a determined JCA squad beat the host Celtics 25-23, 27-25 in the championship match of the Class 3A Providence Regional. The Angels (21-16) clinched their 14th straight regional title, finally putting away Game 1 after a 23-21 lead. The Angels rallied from a 14-11 deficit in that game, then came back from a 21-17 deficit in Game 2 behind Melone’s serving. Nicole Witmer finished with 5 kills and Madeline Grimm had 4. Megan Cladis led defensively with 9 digs. Murphy served an ace for the final point of the match. “The girls gritted one out against a solid Providence team in their gym in front of a crowd of loud fans,” JCA coach Christine Scheibe said. “Mary carried the team not only with her play, but her leadership in the huddle. I’m so incredibly proud of these girls and how much they believe.”
