Lent begins today, Ash Wednesday

ash wednesday

Today is Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent for Christians. Ashes are distributed on the foreheads of Christians on this date to remind us of our mortality and our need to repent of those things that keep us from living as we should. Lent is a time for us to take stock of our spiritual lives and a time for us to turn back once again to the source of real growth and happiness in our lives, Jesus. People are encouraged to give something up or to do good deeds during the Lenten season. Catholics, ages 14 and older, abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and on the Fridays during Lent. Catholics ages 18-60 are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday.
