JCA-25, 25 vs. St. Viator- 21, 12

The one-arm bandit has nothing on Joliet Catholic Academy junior Meg Sliwa. The 5-foot-7 libero delivered a flurry of one-armed digs in the first game Tuesday night as the host Angels jumped to an 18-4 lead en route to a dominant 25-21, 25-12 victory over St. Viator.

In both teams’ East Suburban Catholic Conference opener, JCA (9-5-1, 1-0) followed the stunning Game 1 start with a strong 18-6 lead in Game 2. Sliwa was the catalyst, finishing with 17 digs, eight service points, an ace and a 2.11 serve-receive rating.

“Amazing,” said JCA coach Christine Scheibe, who recorded the 499th win of her 17-year career, all with the Angels. “Meg was just amazing on defense. She made three or four incredible digs right away, and we got kills off of every one of them. That got the team into it, that got the crowd pumped up and energized, and we rolled off of that.”

Senior outside hitter Taylor Zurliene also fueled that boost of energy with nine kills, five points, three digs and an ace, while LaSalle University-bound junior setter Sarah Nahas was smooth as silk with 20 assists, seven digs, six points and an ace. Sophomore outside Emily Holbrook contributed eight kills, three digs and a 2.14 serve-receive, junior right-side Emmie Naal had four kills, four digs and seven points, and junior middle Emily Jones notched three kills and seven blocks.

But going back to the inspiring Sliwa-sparked defense, Nicoleta Meyer, Morgan Leuszler, Kate Mihelich and Meg’s sister Marissa also had digs. “I’ve always been a big proponent of scrappy, get after it, Angel defense,” Scheibe said. “It’s a lot of fun to scramble for balls and flat-out compete, and it really frustrates the other team. Meg continues to play better and better back there with each game and each match, and I can see her confidence growing. She’s been a spark plug for our team in the back row.”

Indeed, the Angels are 6-0-1 in their last seven matches heading into Thursday’s showdown at Sandburg. Consider the two-game sweep of St. Viator another step taken. “We talked to the girls in our pregame about winning the games of five, and they took off with that and made it their mission to own every five-point segment,” Scheibe said. “I think every time we’re stepping out on the floor, we can see the dramatic improvement that we’re making. We’re playing good competition, day in and day out, and it’s only going to make us stronger for November.”

JCA’s sophomore team improved its record to 10-0 with a 25-15, 25-11 ESCC victory over St. Viator. The Angels’ freshman A team also won 25-12, 25-12.
