Football:  Close game yields first loss for Hilltoppers

Joliet Catholic Academy (5-1, 3-1) took the football field Friday night in their first game since losing three offensive players. The Hilltoppers found themselves trailing the St. Patrick Shamrocks 14-7 as halftime approached.

In true Joliet Catholic tradition, the team rallied with an 86-yard scoring drive giving the Hilltoppers the lead at 19-14 with 4:14 left in the third quarter. Senior Mike Ivlow ran the 2-point conversion to make it 21-14.

A face-mask penalty on the Hilltoppers helped set up the Shamrock’s 28-yard touchdown pass to make it 21-20. Completion of a 2-point conversion secured the win for the Shamrocks 22-21.

The Hilltoppers’ final drive reached the Shamrock’s 4-yard line before it fizzled as Earl was sacked on fourth down.

“Our defense played their hearts out,” Football Head Coach Dan Sharp said. “We went down and got the touchdown to go ahead and made the 2-point conversion we just didn’t hold them.”

JCA Alumnus: Mike Passo named MSFA Defensive Player of the Week

Passo, a 2012 Joliet Catholic Academy graduate, is continuing his student-athlete career at the University of St. Francis (Joliet, IL). Following his performance in the Saints’ 56-6 win over Concordia University this past Saturday, Passo was named Mid-States Football Association Mideast League Defensive Player of the Week.

Passo led the USF defensive effort that kept Concordia’s Cardinals off the scoreboard until their final offensive play of the game. He recorded nine tackles, including a pair of tackles-for-loss and a sack, as the Saints limited the Cardinals to only three yards on the ground.
