Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebrated at JCA

feast_immaculate_conception

Today we celebrate the feast of the Immaculate Conception of Mary. This feast celebrates the teaching of the Church that Mary was born without original sin. It took a long time for this doctrine to develop. Two Franciscans, William of Ware and Blessed John Duns Scotus, helped develop the theology. They pointed out that Mary’s Immaculate Conception enhances Jesus’ redemptive work. Human beings are cleansed from original sin through baptism, but in Mary, Jesus’ work was so powerful as to prevent original sin in Mary from her conception. Like Mary, may we be able to say, “I am the handmaid of the Lord. Let it be done to me according to your word.”

Feast of the Immaculate Conception Morning Prayer at JCA

In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Lord Jesus, today we recall the church’s belief that your Blessed Mother was free from all sin from the moment of her conception. Remind us that in our lives, too, the grace of God is always more powerful than sin and guilt. Help us to be open to this grace. We pray this in your name. Amen.

Our Lady of Mt. Carmel…pray for us.
St. Francis of Assisi…pray for us.

In the name of the Father, and of the son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
