Young Hearts for Life coming to JCA on April 11th

YH4LTeam Podz

Joliet Catholic Academy students have an opportunity to receive a FREE heart screening Thursday, April 11, 2019.

Thanks to Young Hearts for Life and TEAM PODZ, the students at JCA will have an opportunity to receive this potentially lifesaving test free of charge (value $75-$150).

TEAM PODZ was formed by a group of family and friends of Dan Podczerwinski. Dan was 26 year old, full of life and was loved by all who knew him. He was the life of the party. He was also an excellent golfer. On Memorial Day, May 27, 2013, while at home with his parents, he slumped over and passed away. Dan was in the prime of his life and just starting to build his career with his father at P.S. & Associates. In an instant, this otherwise healthy and vibrant young man was gone, a result of undiagnosed cardiomyopathy.

Each week, Sudden Cardiac Death claims the lives of 60 young adults in the United States. Sports physicals will only detect less than 4% of students at risk. An EKG has the ability to detect 70% of students at risk for these life-threatening conditions.

Young Hearts for Life is the largest screening program in the United States. They have screened over 160,000 students and have identified over 2,000 students that had an undetected cardiac condition. A trained cardiologist interprets the ECG’s. The false abnormal rate for the program is less than 2%. This rate is better than the false abnormal rate for most other screenings in healthcare.

Results are sent only to the parents. The results are privacy protected healthcare information and NO results will be shared with the school.

YH4L and Joliet Catholic Academy are currently asking for parents to both sign their children up, and to volunteer.

JCA would also like to send a special thanks to Doug Giaudrone ’81, who has been instrumental in bringing Young Hearts for Life to JCA. Doug’s son, Andrew ’10 (known to his friends and loved ones as “G”), passed away tragically from a heart attack at the age of 20 in 2011 while playing basketball. Each year the “Remembering G” foundation sponsors scholarship initiatives at JCA through its annual charity softball game and the “Remembering G” Dueling Pianos Fundraiser. To date, in just six years the “Remembering G” foundation has sponsored over 70 JCA students and raised over $100,000.
