Joliet Catholic Academy athletic director Mr. Dan Sharp is proud to announce the following inductees into the East Suburban Catholic Conference Hall of Fame: head volleyball coach Christine Scheibe, head baseball coach Jared Voss, the 2008 and 2009 State Championship Girls Volleyball teams and the 2009 State Championship Baseball team. The individuals and teams were honored along with four other ESCC state championship teams and seven individual inductees at the 2019 ESCC Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Thursday, April 11, 2019 at the Abbington Banquet Hall in Glen Ellyn, IL.
Scheibe’s 19 seasons at JCA have produced an unprecedented amount of success. Her Angel teams have brought home three state titles and three state runners-up among nine state trophies, including a Class 3A third-place finish this past season in 2018. Scheibe, who has a 565-174-10 overall record at JCA, also has a 10th state medal as an assistant girls basketball coach at Morris and was an assistant coach for the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team that reached the NAIA national tournament in 2001-02. Her Angel teams have won 16 regional titles, including 15 straight from 2001 to 2015, and 10 sectional titles. Six of those sectional titles were consecutive from 2005 to 2010. Her Angel teams have won nine supersectional titles, and she has a 9-1 record in that penultimate round of the state playoffs. She was named Coach of the Year by area daily newspapers in 2002, 2011 and 2014 and by the East Suburban Catholic Conference in 2003, 2007 and 2009. The 2008 Class 3A state championship team went 39-3 and featured Gina Vera (Butler), Katie Hickey and a host of underclassmen who would return for the repeat in 2009. The Angels followed up with a 41-1 record in 2009, led by Annemarie Hickey (Wisconsin), Jennifer Murphy (Evansville), Alyssa Warren (Seton Hall), Claire Randich (Butler), Lainey Wyman (Mississippi State), Stephanie Keca and Jordan Huston (Lipscomb). Those girls are among the 100-plus players that Scheibe, the former vice president of the Illinois Volleyball Coaches Association, has proudly sent on to play at the college level.
Jared Voss, a 1992 JCA graduate, has led the Hilltoppers to a 517-206-2 overall record during his 20+ seasons as head coach. Over his tenure, the Hillmen have averaged over 25 wins per year with two state championships: ’09, ‘13; two state runner-up finishes: ’00, ’04; a 3rd place finish: ’08, and one state 4th place finish: ’10. During this time JCA has also won five supersectional titles, six sectional championships, twelve regional championships, seven ESCC Titles, one IHSBCA runner-up finish: ’12, two IHSBCA Semi-Finalist Appearances: ’03, ’05; overall 10 Elite-8 appearances in 16 years, spring and summer included. Joliet Catholic also won the 2014 IHSBCA State Summer Title, going a perfect 20-0 in the process. He has coached 100 players and counting who have gone on to collegiate careers, eight former players have played professionally, and one (Joe Benson) has reached the Major Leagues. Eight former players are also currently serving on his staff throughout three levels in the program. For his leadership, Voss has been named the Class 3A Coach of the Year twice: ’09, ’13; IHSBCA Area Coach of the Year four times: ’00, ’04, ’08, ’10; IHSBCA Summer Coach of the Year: ’14; Seven-time ESCC Coach of the Year: ’08, ’09, ’11, ’12, ’14, ‘17, ’18. The 2009 State Championship team defeated Chatam Glenwood 3-2 to capture the program’s third overall state championship and finished the year 32-5 overall led by ESCC All-Conference selections Dave Cladis, Steve Cservenyak, Kevin Hulbert, Kendal Paluch, AJ Please, Nick Ratajczak, and Nate Ruzich.
Coach Voss was unable to attend the ESCC banquet due to a tournament in Indianapolis that the 2019 Hilltoppers participated in. The 2009 State Championship team and Coach Voss will be honored before the Monday, April 29 home baseball game at Joliet Slammers Route 66 Stadium in downtown Joliet. The pregame ceremony will take place at 7:15 p.m., first pitch is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Refreshments will be provided postgame on the concourse.
