Jack Moberg ’24 participates in La Journée Intensive en Français

JCA President/Principal Dr. Jeff Budz would like to congratulate Jack Moberg ’24 for participating in La Journée Intensive en Français, a French Immersion Day program for high school students, which was on Saturday, March 4, 2023 at The University of Chicago.

“On behalf of the Chicago / Northern Illinois Chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French I would like to congratulate you on the participation of your French student in La Journée Intensive en Français, our French Immersion Day program for high school students, on Saturday, March 4, 2023. This event was held at The University of Chicago.

The purpose of the day was to provide participants an opportunity for extended use of French, and enrichment of their cultural knowledge of Francophone countries. This was carried out in the culturally based classes, board and word games, singing, dancing, attending a performance and even a Chasse au Trésor (cultural Goosechase.) After passing through customs and partaking of a breakfast of orange juice and croissants at our Café du Monde Francophone, students played warm-up games intended to help them to get to know each other and the staff in a relaxed setting. Everyone then took a pledge, promising to speak in French during the entire day, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., although in reality the students had automatically started speaking French from the very moment they arrived at UChicago! Students attended three cultural sessions, including one taking place at the Smart Museum. In the afternoon, they participated in a Chasse au Trésor throughout the oldest University’s teaching building.

This was a unique opportunity for high school students. 80 students and 4 participating teachers, along with 20 staff members, attended from 20 different schools. Middle schools, high schools, and colleges were all represented. Students like to be challenged, and this day gave them the ability to continue to learn outside of the traditional classroom at the same time as it gave them the opportunity to reinforce what they had been learning within their French classrooms. They also got to interact with students from all over the Chicago and Northern Illinois area. I thank your French teacher, Florence Austrums for encouraging students to participate in an ambitious and unique enterprise designed to facilitate their acquisition and perfection of the French language, and to enhance their knowledge of the culture and history of francophone countries.” -Sylvie Goutas, Director
